What went wrong

The color problems Vanessa corrects most

Find the one that looks like your hair. Each has a usual way back to even, wearable color, and none of them is unusual. Most start with a box color, lightener that went on unevenly, or a summer of sun and pool water.

  • Now
    Goal

    Banding

    What it looks like
Stripes of light and dark running across the hair, usually from color overlapping on the lengths or a different shade every few months.
    What usually helps
Blending each band into the next. That often means lifting the darker stripes a little and adding tone to the lighter ones.
    Soft blending with balayage
  • Now
    Goal

    Brass and orange

    What it looks like
Blonde that turned yellow, or brown that turned orange. Lightening exposes the warm pigment in your hair, and sun, pool water, and minerals push it further.
    What usually helps
Yellow often tones out in one visit. Orange usually needs a little more lift first, then a toner so the cool shade has something even to sit on.
  • Now
    Goal

    Box dye buildup

    What it looks like
Ends that are darker and duller than the roots. Each box color goes over the whole head, so the lengths soak up layer after layer.
    What usually helps
Lifting the buildup gently and in stages, then one even shade from root to ends. Tell Vanessa every product you have used, because some box dyes and hennas react with lightener.
    Covering gray without box dye
  • Now
    Goal

    Patchy lightening

    What it looks like
Spots and sections that lifted more than others, often from bleach at home or lightener that went on unevenly. Some areas look golden while others stayed darker.
    What usually helps
Lifting only the darker patches to meet the rest, then toning everything together so the color reads as one.
  • Now
    Goal

    Faded vivids

    What it looks like
Blue, teal, or green that has washed out to a murky stain, often with a yellow or green cast where it meets the roots.
    What usually helps
Covering it with a warmer shade, since red tones cancel green, or lifting what is left before a fresh color goes on.
    Planning your next vivid
  • Now
    Goal

    Too dark

    What it looks like
A shade that came out darker than the picture on the box or the photo you showed, flat and heavy, and harder to lift than it was to put on.
    What usually helps
Lifting it gently over one or more visits, or adding brighter pieces so it reads softer while you grow it out.

Real corrections

Before and after, by Vanessa

Two real corrections by Vanessa, one cool and one warm. Real clients, never stock photos, so you can see what a planned correction looks like.

Before: dark brown shoulder-length hair with a chunky golden blonde panel at the front, seen from the sideBefore
After: the same client from the side, with smooth, cool silver blonde blended evenly through her hairAfter
Silver blend correction. Real client. Color by Vanessa.

Silver blend correction

Came in with
Dark brown hair with one chunky golden blonde panel at the front that did not blend with anything around it.
Finished with
A cool, even silver blonde blend from root to ends, with no hard edges and no gold left showing.

Why this kind of fix worksWhen one section has been lightened and the rest has not, the usual fix is to bring the two closer together, then tone everything as one so the warm panel disappears into the new shade.

Real client. Color by Vanessa.

Before: long straight hair from behind in a faded, uneven teal
After: the same client from behind with straight, glossy rose copper hair from root to ends
  • Top of the head before the correction: a yellow-green cast at the roots fading into teal lengths
Before, from above: the yellow-green cast where faded teal met the roots

Teal to rose

Came in with
Teal that had faded unevenly through long hair, with a yellow-green cast where the color met the roots.
Finished with
Glossy rose copper from root to ends, rich enough that no trace of green shows through.

Why this kind of fix worksRed and copper tones sit opposite green on the color wheel, so going warmer is often a gentle way to cancel a faded blue-green without stripping the hair back to blonde first.

Your correction consultation

What happens before any color is mixed

A correction starts with a conversation, not a bowl of color. You leave the consultation knowing what is possible, how long it may take, and what it will cost.

  1. 01

Tell the story of your hair

Vanessa asks what is on your hair now and how it got there: box dyes, henna, at-home bleach, vivids, keratin, and roughly when. Old photos help.

  2. 02

A close look at every length

She checks how the color sits from root to ends, where it is darker or brighter, and how strong your hair feels. That tells her how much it can safely take.

  3. 03

    A plan in stages

You hear what can be done today, what should wait, and roughly how many visits it may take. If a gentler plan suits your hair better, she says so.

  4. 04

    The price before any work

You agree to the plan and the quote before any lightener or color is mixed. Nothing starts until you are comfortable with both.

One visit or several

Why a correction can take more than one visit

Hair can only give up so much color in one sitting before it starts to weaken. Dark permanent color also comes out in layers, so the last layer often shows up only after the first has lifted.

Spacing the work a few weeks apart keeps your hair strong enough to finish the job. Some corrections are done in a day. Vanessa tells you which kind yours is before anything starts.

1 Often a single visit

  • Yellow blonde that only needs toning
  • Faded color that needs refreshing in a similar shade
  • Light hair you want to take deeper or warmer
  • A small panel or patch that needs blending

2+ Often more than one

  • Dark box dye to a much lighter shade
  • Several layers of permanent color on the lengths
  • A vivid stain that needs lifting before a lighter color
  • Hair that already feels dry, stretchy, or fragile

An example of a staged plan

Dark box dye to a softer, lighter brown, spread over two visits.

  1. Today

    Where you start

Layers of dark box dye, darkest on the ends, with bands where each new color overlapped the last.

  2. Visit one

    Even it out

Gentle lifting where the color is heaviest, with bond protection in the lightener. Hair often looks warm at this stage. That is expected.

  3. Then a few weeks
    Visit two

    Refine and tone

More lift only where it is still needed, then a toner or gloss that settles the warmth into the shade you chose.

  4. After

    Keep it even

Home care, a gloss refresh when the tone softens, and no more box color over the top.

Before your appointment

What to do before you come in

The more Vanessa knows about your hair, the safer and more accurate your plan. Jot these down before you call, then leave your hair as it is until the consultation.

Your color history

Anything you remember helps, even a rough guess.

Box dye
Brand and shade if you still have the box, and how many times
When
Roughly when each color went on, even if it was a year ago
Henna or metallic dyes
Some react with lightener, so this one matters most
Bleach or lightener
At home or at another salon
Vivids
Blue, green, purple, or pink, and how faded they are now
Treatments
Keratin smoothing, perms, or relaxers

Bring with you

  • A photo of your hair before it went wrong
  • Two or three photos of the color you want
  • The box or a photo of it, if you used box dye

Hold off on

  • Another box color

Going darker over a mistake adds one more layer to lift out later.

  • Color removers and bleach at home

They can lift unevenly and leave hair weaker before the real correction begins.

  • Purple shampoo on orange

It helps yellow, but it cannot cancel orange, and heavy use can leave light ends looking dull or lilac.

Aftercare

Keeping corrected color even

Corrected color lasts longest when it is treated gently, especially near the beach where sun, salt, and pools all pull color out.

  • Wash cool and gentle

Cool water and a color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo let freshly corrected color last. Skip a wash when you can.

  • Turn the heat down

Use a heat protectant and a lower setting on irons and dryers, especially if your plan included lightening.

  • Shield it from sun and salt

Strong sun pushes color toward brass and salt water dries the ends. Rinse with fresh water after the beach.

  • Prep before the pool

Wet your hair with clean water and smooth on conditioner before you swim. Chlorine can tint light hair green.

  • Expect toner to soften

Toner and gloss fade before the color underneath. If the warmth creeps back, a quick refresh is often all it needs.

  • Keep your next step booked

If your plan has more than one visit, keep the spacing Vanessa suggests. Waiting lets your hair recover between stages.

Can you fix box dye?

Usually, yes. The plan depends on how many layers are on your hair, how dark they are, and how strong your hair is. Tell Vanessa everything you have used, including henna, because some products react with lightener.

Will I need more than one visit?

Sometimes. Toning out yellow or blending one patch can often be done in a single appointment. Dark box dye to a much lighter shade usually takes two or more visits spaced a few weeks apart. Vanessa tells you which to expect at the consultation.

How much does color correction cost?

It depends on what is on your hair, how far it has to go, your length and density, and how many steps the plan takes. Vanessa quotes at the consultation, before any color is mixed. Call 386-872-2263 to schedule.

Why did my hair turn orange, and can it be fixed?

Lightening reveals the warm pigment inside your hair. Brown hair passes through red and orange before it reaches yellow, so stopping too soon leaves it brassy. It can usually be fixed with a little more lift where needed and then a toner.

My color came out too dark. Can you lighten it?

Often, yes, but permanent dark color comes out more slowly than it went in. Vanessa may lift it gently over more than one visit, or add brighter pieces so it looks softer while it grows out.

Can you get rid of faded blue or green?

Blue and green stain lightened hair as they fade. Covering them with a warmer shade is often the gentlest route, because red tones cancel green. Lifting them out first is possible, and Vanessa explains which suits your hair.

Should I try to fix it at home first?

Please do not. Another box color, a color remover, or bleach at home usually adds a layer that has to come out later. Call the salon and leave your hair as it is until your consultation.

Will a correction damage my hair?

Any lightening asks something of your hair, which is why corrections are planned around its condition. Vanessa colors with Goldwell, and Goldwell makes its LightDimensions lighteners with BondPro+ bond protection. If your hair needs a gentler plan, she will say so.
