5 Goldwell color lines in the salon

Why Goldwell

Why a colorist chooses one color brand

The brand behind your color shapes how predictable it is, how well it covers, and how your hair feels afterward. Vanessa works with Goldwell for these reasons, and she tells you which lines go into your formula and why.

  1. Color that reads the same each visit

A professional color system is made so a written formula gives a predictable result. That is what lets a root touch-up match the color you left with last time, instead of starting from a guess.

  2. Coverage you can plan around

Goldwell rates Topchic, Topchic Zero, and Elumen for up to 100% grey coverage and Colorance for blending up to 75%. Knowing what each line is built for lets Vanessa choose between full coverage and a softer blend with you.

  3. Condition during the service

Goldwell adds IntraLipid and BondPro+ technology to Topchic and pairs its lighteners with BondPro+ bond protection. How your hair feels after color matters as much as the shade.

  4. One maker, every kind of color

Permanent, demi-permanent, direct-dye color, and lighteners all come from the same brand. Vanessa can plan a base, lightening, and toner in one consultation with products she uses every day.

Not sure which service you need yet? Start with the hair color overview, or call and describe what you want. Every color service at the salon starts with a conversation.

01Permanent color

Topchic

Permanent color and full gray coverage

Topchic is Goldwell's permanent color, mixed from a tube or from the Depot Can System that Goldwell calls color in a can. It is the line for full gray coverage, all-over color, root touch-ups, and the base shade that sits under highlights or balayage.

02Ammonia-free permanent color

Topchic Zero

Permanent color without ammonia

Topchic Zero is Goldwell's permanent color made without ammonia, and it is vegan. Ask for it if you want permanent gray coverage from an ammonia-free formula. Whether it is the right fit for your hair and scalp is something Vanessa talks through with you at the consultation.

03Demi-permanent color and gloss

Colorance

Toner, gloss, and soft gray blending

Colorance is Goldwell's ammonia-free demi-permanent color. It adds tone without lifting your natural color, so it is what tones blondes after lightening, adds gloss, refreshes color that has faded, and blends gray softly instead of covering it. Colorance Gloss Tones is its fast liquid gloss and toner.

04Direct-dye permanent color

Elumen

Rich, saturated color that fades true

Elumen is a permanent color that works differently from most: an acidic direct dye that is mixed without developer. Goldwell makes it for rich, saturated shades, which is why it is the line behind vivid pinks, magentas, reds, and coppers.

  • Stays vibrant longer than oxidative color and fades true to tone.
  • Suits clients sensitive to oxidative dyes. Goldwell still recommends a patch test.

05Lighteners with bond protection

LightDimensions

The lighteners behind every blonde

LightDimensions is Goldwell's family of lighteners: SilkLift Strong, SilkLift Zero Ammonia, SilkLift Clay, SilkLift Control Ash and Control Pearl, Oxycur Platin, and the Brighteners. They take hair lighter for highlights, balayage, and blonde, and they build the clean base that vivid color needs.

How far each lightener can lift, as Goldwell rates it

A level is one step lighter on the scale colorists use, from black to the palest blonde. These are Goldwell's maximums. How far your hair should go is a separate call Vanessa makes after checking its condition and history.

Which line, for which goal

Start with what you want your hair to do

You do not need to know a product name to book. Tell Vanessa the result you are after, and she chooses the line, or the combination of lines, at your consultation. This is how they usually line up.

BondPro+

Bond protection while you lighten

Lightening changes the inside of each hair as well as its color. Goldwell builds protection into the process, and Vanessa still plans how far your hair should go in one visit.

BondPro+ bond protection against damage and breakage.

Goldwell, on its LightDimensions lighteners. Goldwell also lists IntraLipid and BondPro+ technology in Topchic to protect hair during coloring.
  • What lightener does

Lightener opens the cuticle and breaks down the pigment inside each hair. Some of the inner bonds that give hair its strength are affected along the way, which is why over-lightened hair can feel stretchy or snap.

  • Where bond protection fits

Bond protection is added during lightening, as part of the service. It is not a separate treatment you need to book.

  • What it does not replace

Bond protection does not make every goal safe in a single visit. Going from dark to pale blonde, or lightening over old box dye, can still take more than one appointment, and Vanessa plans those steps with you.

  • Care after you leave

A gentle shampoo, heat protection, and regular trims help lightened hair hold up to Florida sun and salt water between visits.

Coming from another salon

Matching your Goldwell formula

If you wore Goldwell color somewhere else and loved it, bring what you can. A written formula helps, and Vanessa reads your hair either way.

  • Your formula, if you can get it

Ask your last salon for the line, the shade numbers, and the developer. Many salons keep a formula card for each client.

  • The salon name, if you cannot

No formula is fine. The salon's name and roughly when you were last colored still help Vanessa understand what is on your hair.

  • Photos of color you loved

A photo taken in daylight shows tone better than a description. Bring one of your own color at its best if you have it.

  • Anything you did at home

Box dye, henna, an at-home gloss, or a color-depositing shampoo changes how new color takes. Mention it even if it was a while ago.

Why the same formula can look different

Hair changes between appointments. Sun, salt water, and washing fade color, and new growth has no color on it at all. Vanessa checks your regrowth, how the last color has faded, and the condition of your ends, then adjusts the formula so the result matches what you remember. If the old color has gone brassy or patchy, a short color correction plan may come first.

Pricing

What Goldwell color costs

There is no separate price for Goldwell, because you book a color service, not a product. Vanessa quotes once she knows your hair and what you want it to do.

  • The service sets the price more than the color line: a root touch-up, a gloss, and a full head of highlights are priced differently
  • Hair length and density decide how much color or lightener is mixed
  • Lightening, toning, and glossing steps each add time to the appointment
  • Corrections and big changes may be planned over more than one visit
  • Vanessa quotes on the phone or at your consultation, before color is mixed

Do you use Goldwell hair color?

Yes. Vanessa colors with all five Goldwell color lines: Topchic, Topchic Zero, Colorance, Elumen, and the LightDimensions lighteners. The salon is at 236 Riverbeach Dr. in Ormond Beach, just north of Daytona Beach.

Is Topchic Zero ammonia-free?

Yes. Goldwell describes Topchic Zero as 100% ammonia-free and vegan, with up to 100% grey coverage across 38 shades. Mention it when you book if you would like an ammonia-free permanent color.

What is Elumen hair color?

Elumen is Goldwell's acidic direct-dye permanent color. It is mixed without developer, and Goldwell says it contains no peroxide, no ammonia, and no PPD or PTD. Goldwell rates it for up to 76% more color intensity than oxidative color and says it fades true to tone, which is why it suits vivid shades.

Can you match my old Goldwell color?

Bring your formula if your last salon can share it, along with photos of the color you liked. Vanessa checks your regrowth and how the old color has faded, then adjusts the formula so the result matches what you remember. Without a formula, she builds one from your hair.

Do you sell Goldwell products?

No. The salon offers Goldwell color as an in-salon service only and does not sell Goldwell products. Vanessa can recommend home care for your color at your appointment.

Which Goldwell color covers gray best?

Goldwell rates Topchic, Topchic Zero, and Elumen for up to 100% grey coverage, and Colorance for blending up to 75%. Whether you want full coverage or a softer blend is the first thing Vanessa asks about.

What is a Colorance gloss?

Colorance Gloss Tones is Goldwell's liquid gloss and toner. Goldwell says it processes in 10 minutes and gives up to 3x more shine than untreated hair. It is often used to tone blondes after highlights or balayage and to refresh color between bigger appointments.

I have a sensitive scalp. Which color should I ask for?

Tell Vanessa when you book. Goldwell makes Topchic Zero without ammonia and positions Elumen for people sensitive to oxidative dyes, and it recommends a patch test for Elumen. If you have ever reacted to hair color, check with your doctor before your appointment.
