Pink, red, copper, teal, and every pastel

The vivid shades women ask for most around Daytona Beach, what each one needs underneath, and how it softens over time. Photos are real clients of Vanessa.

  • Real client: Layered vivid magenta hair styled in soft, bouncy curls, photographed from the sideReal client

    Pink and magenta

    • Hot pink
    • Magenta
    • Fuchsia

The most requested vivid. Magenta reads rich and jewel-like, hot pink reads bright and playful, and both suit warm and cool skin.

    Starting point
Bright pink needs lightened hair. Deeper magenta can show on a medium base.
    As it fades
    Softens toward a lighter pink

  • Red and ruby

    • Cherry
    • Ruby
    • Wine

From a bright cherry to a deep wine. Red is one of the few vivids that can go on darker hair and still glow, especially in the sun.

    Starting point
Often works on a medium or darker base, with less lightening.
    As it fades
Usually the quickest to soften, toward a coppery red

  • Real client: Long copper balayage with curtain bangs and soft waves, photographed from behindReal client

    Copper

    • Penny
    • Ginger
    • Amber

Copper sits between natural and bold. It can be bright and all-over, or melted through brunette as balayage for a softer copper.

    Starting point
Brighter copper on dark hair usually needs some lightening first.
    As it fades
    Softens toward a golden copper

    Photo: color by Vanessa

  • Real client: Close-up of sleek, glossy rose copper hair with face-framing layersReal client

    Rose gold and rose copper

    • Rose gold
    • Rose copper
    • Dusty rose

Pink with a warm metallic cast. Rose gold is soft and pretty on blonde, and rose copper gives a deeper, glossy version on darker hair.

    Starting point
Rose gold needs a light, even blonde. Rose copper is more forgiving.
    As it fades
    Softens toward peach or blonde

    Photo: color by Vanessa

  • Teal and blue

    • Teal
    • Ocean
    • Sapphire

A coastal favorite. Teal and blue look striking as a peekaboo or money piece, and they pair well with dark hair underneath.

    Starting point
Needs a clean, pale blonde with little yellow left in it.
    As it fades
Can drift toward green over yellow-toned hair

  • Pastels

    • Lavender
    • Blush
    • Mint

Lavender, blush, peach, and mint. Pastels are a sheer tint of color, so they look soft and airy, and they ask the most of your base.

    Starting point
Needs very pale, even blonde. Usually the most lightening of any vivid.
    As it fades
The fastest to wash out, back toward blonde

Why the base matters

A vivid is only as bright as what sits under it

Vivid color is translucent, like stained glass. Whatever is on your hair already shows through it, so most of the result is decided before the color goes on.

  1. Read what is on your hair now

Old box dye, henna, brass, and a vivid from months ago all sit under the new color and change it. Vanessa asks about your history first.

  2. Lift only as far as the shade needs

A deep red may need little or no lightening. A pastel needs pale blonde. Lightening only as far as the shade needs keeps your hair in better condition.

  3. Even out the canvas

Patchy or brassy spots show through a vivid. Evening them out first is what lets the final color read the same from root to ends.

When your hair needs lifting, Vanessa works with Goldwell LightDimensions. Goldwell rates SilkLift Strong for up to 9 levels of lift and SilkLift Zero Ammonia for up to 6 levels on fine or stressed hair, with BondPro+ bond protection built in.

Box dye or an old vivid underneath? Some hair needs a correction before a new shade.

Color correction
  • Dark brown

The pink barely shows. It reads as a dark berry tint in the sun.

  • Brassy blonde

The gold underneath pushes the pink toward coral.

  • Pale, even blonde

The pink reads true and bright.

The color itself

Goldwell Elumen, made for saturated shades

Elumen is Goldwell's permanent acidic direct-dye color. It is one of the five Goldwell lines Vanessa works with, and the one suited to rich, saturated tones.

Up to76%
more shine than oxidative color, according to Goldwell
Up to40%
and no ammonia, PPD, or PTD in the formula, according to Goldwell
Noperoxide
  • Why it stays bright

Goldwell says Elumen stays vibrant longer than oxidative color and fades true to tone. A shade that fades true stays in the same color family as it softens.

  • No developer

Elumen is an acidic direct dye that goes on without a developer. Goldwell says it suits people who are sensitive to oxidative dyes, and still recommends a patch test. Tell Vanessa about any past reactions.

  • Not only for vivids

Goldwell also rates Elumen for up to 100% grey coverage, so a rich red or copper can be an option if you are covering grey too.

Placement

All-over, peekaboo, money piece, or vivid ends

Where the color goes matters as much as the shade. Less vivid on the surface means a softer grow-out and less upkeep, which is why so many first-timers start with a peekaboo.

  • All-over vivid

One saturated shade from root to ends, or a melt of two shades. The boldest look, and the one people notice from across the room.

    Shows
    All the time
    Upkeep
The most. Fading and regrowth both show.
  • Like Vanessa's

    Peekaboo

A hidden layer of color underneath your natural shade. It flashes when you move, tuck your hair, or wear it up, and hides when you need it to.

    Shows
When you move or wear it up
    Upkeep
Low. Your own color covers the regrowth.
  • Money piece

Two bright ribbons framing your face. A small amount of color with a big effect, and an easy way to try a vivid for the first time.

    Shows
    Front and center
    Upkeep
Low to medium. Small, easy to refresh.
  • Vivid ends

Color through the lower lengths, blended up into your natural shade. The root grows out without a line, and the ends can be trimmed away later.

    Through the lengths
    Upkeep
Low. Nothing to touch up at the root.

Your appointment

How a vivid color visit works

Every visit follows the same path, from the first conversation to the finished style. How long it takes depends on your hair and the shade, so ask when you call.

  1. 01

    Consultation

Bring photos of the shade you love. Vanessa asks about your color history, looks at the condition of your hair, and talks through placement and upkeep honestly.

  2. 02

    Prepare the base

Where the shade needs it, your hair is lightened or evened out first. Goldwell says its LightDimensions lighteners include BondPro+ protection against breakage.

  3. 03

    Apply the color

Vivid color goes on generously and evenly, all-over or in the sections you chose, so it reads the same from root to ends.

  4. 04

    Rinse and finish

A cool rinse, then a style so you leave with the color shown off. A cut can be added at the same visit.

  5. 05

    Your care plan

You leave knowing how to wash it, what to avoid in the first days, and roughly when to come back to refresh.

How long vivids last

Every wash takes a little color. Here is how to slow it down.

Vivid color sits mostly near the outside of the hair, so it softens a little each time you shampoo. Hot water, strong sun, salt, and chlorine all speed that up, and the Daytona Beach coast has plenty of each.

Coming back to refresh

Many people book a refresh when the shade has softened more than they like, or when regrowth starts to show on all-over color. Vanessa will suggest a rhythm for your shade and placement at your appointment.

Care at home and at the beach

  • Rinse cool

Hot water opens the hair's surface and lets color slip out. Wash and rinse with the coolest water you can stand.

  • Wash less

Every wash takes a little color with it. Stretch the days between washes and lean on dry shampoo.

  • Use color-safe care

A gentle, sulfate-free shampoo strips less. Ask Vanessa whether a color-depositing conditioner suits your shade between visits.

  • Shade it from the sun

Strong Florida sun softens vivids, reds and pinks especially. A hat or a UV spray helps on beach days.

  • Prep for salt water

Wet your hair with fresh water and comb through a little conditioner before the ocean, then rinse as soon as you are out.

  • Be careful with chlorine

Pool water can strip vivid color and shift its tone. Prep the same way, keep swims short in the first weeks, and rinse right away.

  • Expect a little transfer

The first few washes may tint your towel or pillowcase. Dark towels save the white ones.

How long does vivid hair color last?

Vivid shades fade a little with every wash, so how long they last depends on the shade, your base, and your routine. Most look brightest in the first few weeks. Reds, pinks, and pastels usually soften quickest. Goldwell says its Elumen color stays vibrant longer than oxidative color and fades true to tone. Cool rinses, fewer washes, and sun protection all help, and Vanessa will suggest a refresh rhythm at your appointment.

Do I have to bleach my hair to get vivid color?

It depends on the shade and your starting color. Pastels and bright pinks, blues, and teals need lightened hair. Deeper reds, coppers, and magentas can sometimes go on a medium or darker base with little or no lightening. Vanessa decides after seeing your hair. When lightening is needed, she uses Goldwell LightDimensions, which Goldwell says includes BondPro+ protection against breakage.

Can I get a peekaboo or money piece instead of all-over color?

Yes. A peekaboo hides a layer of vivid color under your natural shade, a money piece frames your face, and vivid ends are painted through the lengths. Smaller placements are an easy way to try a bold shade, and they are usually lower upkeep than all-over color.

Why do red and pink fade so fast?

Vivid color molecules sit mostly near the outside of the hair, so a little rinses away with each wash, faster in hot water. Reds and pinks are especially noticeable as they soften, and sun, salt water, and chlorine speed it up. Cool water, color-safe shampoo, and fewer washes make the biggest difference.

Can I go to the beach or the pool with vivid hair?

Yes, with some prep. Wet your hair with fresh water and add a little conditioner before you swim, then rinse as soon as you get out. Chlorine is harder on vivid color than salt water, so keep pool time short in the first weeks. A hat helps in strong sun.

Will vivid color damage my hair?

The lightening step is what asks the most of your hair, so Vanessa checks its condition first and lightens only as far as your shade needs. Goldwell says Elumen has no peroxide and no ammonia, and that its LightDimensions lighteners include BondPro+ bond protection. If your hair is not ready for a big change, she will tell you and suggest a gentler path.

My vivid faded to a strange color. Can you fix it?

Often, yes. Faded teal can turn green and faded red can turn orange, depending on what is underneath. Vanessa can refresh it, change to a new shade, or plan a color correction to bring it back to something even. Bring a photo of the color when it was fresh.

How much does vivid hair color cost?

It depends on the shade, how much lightening your base needs, the placement, and the length and thickness of your hair. Call 386-872-2263 and ask for Vanessa. She quotes after she has seen your hair, before any color is mixed.
